Committees, Programs and ProjectsReport to <strong>the</strong><strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> Governors<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Bar</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>June 22, 2013Hilton Head Island, SCAdvocates for Students with DisabilitiesCo-Chairs: Emma He<strong>the</strong>rington & Laurice RutledgeThis year <strong>the</strong> Advocates for Students with Disabilities (ASD) Committee hosted a monthly Speaker Seriesw<strong>here</strong> attorneys and advocates working directly with students and schools discussed a variety <strong>of</strong> issuesfaced by students with disabilities. The Speaker Series included topics such <strong>as</strong> advocating for students in<strong>the</strong> juvenile justice system, perspectives from School <strong>Board</strong> attorneys, and issues faced by homelessstudents with disabilities.The ASD Committee also worked on continuing and growing its major accomplishment from <strong>the</strong> 2011 –2012 year, <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Education Advocacy for Children with Special Needs Program (Program).The Program is a joint effort between <strong>the</strong> ASD Committee, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> <strong>State</strong> University College <strong>of</strong> Lawand <strong>the</strong> Health Law Partnership (HeLP), which trains individuals to take special education pro bonoc<strong>as</strong>es. This year, 35 individuals attended <strong>the</strong> training. To date, 13 c<strong>as</strong>es have been referred to Programattorneys, and over half have already been resolved with favorable outcomes.Appellate AdmissionsCo-Chairs: Kristen Cawley & Jacob M<strong>as</strong>seeThe Appellate Admissions Committee held its Spring M<strong>as</strong>s Swearing-In Ceremony on May 9 at <strong>the</strong>Freight Depot in Atlanta. This Ceremony includes admission to <strong>the</strong> Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, Court <strong>of</strong>Appeals <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> and <strong>the</strong> U.S. District Court for <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn District <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>. Judges CarlaMcMillian and William Duffey Jr. delivered remarks to <strong>the</strong> more than 180 applicants and <strong>the</strong>ir guests.Aspiring Youth ProgramCo-Chairs: Tamika Sykes & Lindy ZimmermanThe Aspiring Youth Committee completed <strong>the</strong>ir annual "Great Debaters" program in April. This year <strong>the</strong>group partnered with a local community outreach center located in <strong>the</strong> Roosevelt Park Community inCollege Park. Each week, <strong>the</strong> group met with students between ages 6 and 13 and encouraged <strong>the</strong>m touse analytic skills, voice <strong>the</strong>ir opinions, and get excited about debate through fun interactive games.Business LawCo-Chairs: Jessica Sabbath & Sarah StatzThe Business Law Committee held its final event <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year on April 9 at King & Spalding. Judge Philip F.E<strong>the</strong>ridge provided an entertaining one-hour CLE program examining key considerations for effective89
