Intellectual Property Section,State Bar of GeorgiaAnnual ReportPage 21 of 67between the innovators and intellectual property experts, as well as give students anopportunity to be exposed to some intellectual property training. We had held severalevents at the local law schools, and I thought it was long overdue for us to reach out totechnical students as well. The Intellectual Property Section, in conjunction with the Institute of ContinuingLegal Education in Georgia (ICLE) and the Georgia Institute of Technology, thereforeheld an Intellectual Property Boot Camp on October 17, 2012 at Georgia Tech’sTechnology Square Research Building. Approximately 60 students, patent agents, andattorneys attended this CLE event. The half-day event provided a great opportunity totake a crash course on the basics and provided practical advice in three of the major IPpractice areas. We had excellent presenters: Allie Roach and Liz Wheeler (Copyright101), Melissa Linsky (Trademark in Sports Law), Yvonne Shyntum, PhD (Patent LawOverview), and Art Gardner (The Dirty Dozen: Mistakes most Commonly made byPatent Attorneys and How to Avoid Them).INTRODUCTION OF MONTHLY NEWSLETTER:In past years, the Section’s newsletter has been issued at most two to three timesper year. During the 2011-2012 fiscal year, only one newsletter was sent to the Section.Past newsletters were many pages. Putting it together was cumbersome. Further, it wasmailed to the members, which incurred a cost and was not the most environmentallyefficient method of delivery. This year, thanks to the efforts of the Newsletter CommitteeChair Brent R. Bellows, we streamlined the newsletter and delivered it electronicallyonce a month for the first time in the Section’s history. The streamlined letter providedrecaps of past events, reminders of upcoming events, and committee information. Fromthe many positive comments I received, I believe Section members found the newsletterto be a much simpler and more powerful tool with which to stay abreast of Sectionevents. A sample newsletter is attached as Appendix A.247
