Outreach (VJO) program supports this effort; Section membersinvolved with VJO include MLAP coordinator Norman Zoller, VAethics attorney George Bradford, and Veterans Advocate Drew Early.- In Sepember 2012, Norman Zoller <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> MLAP and John Camp, Chair<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Section, were invited to participate in a Workshop PlanningSession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>State</strong> and Juvenile Court Justices inColumbus, GA. The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workshop w<strong>as</strong> to consider trainingneeds for jurists to better understand military families and children <strong>of</strong>veterans and service members and how to alleviate <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong><strong>as</strong>signments, deployments, and military service in general in c<strong>as</strong>es thatcome before <strong>the</strong>m.- The Section also took on a greater role in being <strong>the</strong> watchdog forlegislation that could impact upon service members and veterans. TheSection followed and submitted comments on such diverse legislativeinitiatives <strong>as</strong>: SB 61, concerning execution <strong>of</strong> liens on personal storageunits (<strong>as</strong> many service members store <strong>the</strong>ir property when <strong>the</strong>y aredeployed); HB 16 (concerning steps to make <strong>the</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> War Veterans’Home eligible to participate in federal Medicare and Medicaidprograms); HB 188 (to facilitate <strong>the</strong> licensing <strong>of</strong> recently retired ordischarged service members and military spouses in certain trade andvocational fields <strong>of</strong> employment); and, enactment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UniformDeployed Parents Custody and Visitation Act (UDPCVA). TheUDPCVA is a significant advancement in protecting <strong>the</strong> rights <strong>of</strong>military parents and families whenever <strong>the</strong>y are deployed. John Camp,<strong>as</strong> Section Chair, obtained <strong>the</strong> endorsement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UDPCVA by <strong>the</strong><strong>State</strong> <strong>Bar</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>, and it is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir key legislative agenda itemsfor <strong>the</strong> 2014 Legislative Session. Follow it <strong>as</strong> HB 685, sponsored byRep. Edward Lindsey.- As a gesture <strong>of</strong> symbolic comradary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Section and <strong>the</strong> MLAP, wejointly commissioned <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> a Challenge Coin with a Sectionside and a MLAP side. Challenge Coins carry special significance in <strong>the</strong>military dating back to <strong>the</strong> Roman Legions. The Section intends to use<strong>the</strong>se coins to recognize individuals who have added significantly toour goals and mission.- The Section also published its first Section News Letter in 2013 thanksto <strong>the</strong> extraordinary efforts <strong>of</strong> Steve Shewmaker and technical<strong>as</strong>sistance from Derrick Stanley <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Bar</strong> Staff. The Newsletterw<strong>as</strong> an instant success with our members. We also shared it with o<strong>the</strong>rSections and organizations that we have partnered with in 2012-2013.Our goals it to publish it three times per year and to include news <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>304
