Chapter 5Current geological events comm<strong>on</strong>lyreported in <strong>the</strong> media5.1 <strong>Earth</strong> hazardsGeological events and activities are frequently reported in newspapers, <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> radio andTV, and <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> internet, but quite <strong>of</strong>ten it is clear that <strong>the</strong> reporter didn’t have a goodunderstanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> geoscience being reported. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> most comm<strong>on</strong> reports refer to geologicalhazards, climate change, fossil finds and local issues such as quarrying and landfilland <strong>the</strong> background to all <strong>the</strong>se aspects is given below.<strong>Earth</strong> processes can destroy singlebuildings and whole regi<strong>on</strong>s and itis <strong>the</strong> fast-acting large-scale processesthat are most destructive.<strong>Earth</strong>quakes <strong>the</strong>mselves can behighly dangerous and even moreso when <strong>the</strong>y trigger landslidesor tsunamis. Small, ‘safe’ earthquakesoccur in most parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>world most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time, caused byflexing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moving plates, butlarge earthquakes are most comm<strong>on</strong>at <strong>the</strong> active margins <strong>of</strong> plateboundaries.Most earthquakes occur whenplate movement causes pressuresto build up in <strong>the</strong> crust. When <strong>the</strong>pressures become too high, <strong>the</strong>rocks fracture al<strong>on</strong>g a fault, ra<strong>the</strong>rlike <strong>the</strong> way a piece <strong>of</strong> wood snapswhen you bend it too much. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>Figure 5.1: A school in San Salvador destroyed by anearthquake.109
