Oil/gas is less dense than <strong>the</strong> water that most sedimentary rocks c<strong>on</strong>tain, andso flows upwards from <strong>the</strong> source rock through <strong>the</strong> water in <strong>the</strong> pore spaces into a porousand permeable reservoir rock (sometimes though, <strong>the</strong> oil/gas is squeezed sideways or evendownwards). If <strong>the</strong> reservoir rock has been sealed by a cap rock and formed into <strong>the</strong> righttrap shape, <strong>the</strong> oil and gas will be trapped. Try modeling your own oil and gas field andborehole through, ‘Trapped: why can’t oil and gas escape from <strong>the</strong>ir underground pris<strong>on</strong>’,at http://www.earthlearningidea.com.In oil and gasfield areas, <strong>the</strong> rock sequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong> is usually <str<strong>on</strong>g>we</str<strong>on</strong>g>ll known from o<strong>the</strong>rnearby boreholes, so geologists will already think that <strong>the</strong>re is likely to be a source rockin <strong>the</strong> area, with a reservoir rock above, possibly capped by a cap rock. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> hydrocarb<strong>on</strong>explorati<strong>on</strong> team must <strong>the</strong>refore find a trap and drill into it to see if it c<strong>on</strong>tains oil/gas.138
