Financing:By the Greek state and the Social EuropeanFund.Main reason(s) why your project is a bestpractice example:It has led to the development of a systemwhich: Endorses and supports multilingualismand plurilingual citizenry Is concerned with the language user –rather than the language itself (asinternational exams unavoidably are).Because of the project, a global systemhas been created; i.e., a system thattakes into account local needs, globalconditions of knowledge and production,and international concerns regardingtesting and assessment.It has facilitated conditions so as toinclude an innovative aspect ofintercultural communication, for the KPGis the only language exam battery to datewhich tests mediation performance;performance that entails relayingmessages from one language to anotherbut that is distinct from translation.Operating as a mediator betweencultures, languages, discourses and textsrequires strategies not necessarily taughtbut required for effective citizenry inmulticultural and multilingual societies. extended and systematic research on:the input and the output of the examsin the different languages testedthrough KPG so as to make reliablecomparisonsthe profile of KPG candidates, theirattitudes and opinions regarding testpapers in each of the languagesthe quality of the oral test in English,the validity of speaking and mediationtasks, examiner attitudes toward thetest and specific activities, andexaminer conduct and communicationstrategiesthe quality of script evaluation, waysthat script raters use evaluationcriteria, sustainable inter-raterreliability, and characteristics ofscripts which systematically causeserious problems in inter-raterreliability.Also, it has created ground for academicresearch on issues such as the following:The effect of text and reader variableson reading comprehension and theeffect of listener audio text variablesin the KPG exams Different world representations andideologies in the reading texts ofdifferent exam batteries in EnglishInterlocutor performance variability atdifferent exam levels and in differentKPG language examsWriting and listening task difficultyand the effect of task and assessmentvariables Mediation tasks and mediationperformance by Greek users ofEnglish Source text regulated writtenmediation performance in the KPGexams resulting in hybrid formations Corpus-based research of textgrammar in KPG candidates’ scripts Investigating literacy requirements ofreading and listening comprehensiontasks in the KPG English and Frenchexams Effective listening comprehensiontest-taking strategies in the KPGexams. The project has also involved among otheractions:The design of tools to measure test qualityand effectivenessThe development of candidate script corporaThe development of tools and systems forthe quantitative and qualitative analysis ofdataThe development of different applications forthe management of data and resources The systematic training of a total of 7.000examiners in the different languages andabout 600 script raters.Project objectives:The socially sensitive objectives of the KPG examsare the following:They are affordable to everyone as the KPGdoes not aim at material profit or symbolic gain.Their point of reference is not the language asan autonomous meaning system but languageuse in particular social contexts in ways that arebased on social needs and which are sociallymeaningful.
