Electronics Clean-Up Event in New OrleansIn December, <strong>Dell</strong> joined local and national partners tohost a one-day electronics recycling event in NewOrleans, Louisiana. Residents of the region could dropoff storm-damaged computers and television sets forproper recycling. The event was also made possible bythe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the LouisianaDepartment of Environment Quality, Jefferson Parish,City of Kenner, the Pontchartrain Center, and theNational Recycling Coalition. Approximately 5 tons ofequipment were collected from more than 100 participants.The event was a pilot collection model to recoverelectronics that may have been destroyed in the hurricanes,and was part of a number of regional efforts toclean up debris in the area.Computer Recycling Grants and EventsIn addition to <strong>Dell</strong>'s ongoing free home pick-up recyclingprogram for consumers, <strong>Dell</strong> continues to work on a variety ofinitiatives to educate consumers about the importance ofresponsibly disposing of unwanted computer equipment. Theseinitiatives have included one-day recycling events managed by<strong>Dell</strong> in a number of communities, financial grants and technicaltraining for communities to hold their own one-day recyclingevents, and a partnership with Goodwill and local governmentsin areas where <strong>Dell</strong> has launched the Reconnect program.Through the <strong>Dell</strong> Recycling National Tour in 2003, <strong>Dell</strong> learnedthat one-day computer recycling events were effective atraising awareness of computer recycling among consumers,environmental groups, elected officials, and the media. In 2004,<strong>Dell</strong> launched a pilot program offering $10,000 grants to selectnonprofits, state and local governments, or higher educationorganizations that planned to host a computer recycling eventfor their community.Although one-day events are not a sustainable solution to theoverall recycling challenge, they have proven to be valuable toboth the company's community relations and environmentalresponsibility goals. In 2005, <strong>Dell</strong> continued to evolve ourapproach to raising consumer awareness of computer recyclingthrough one-day recycling events.service in partnership with RT Centre, a partnership betweenCentral Remedial Clinic and Centre for Independent Living,and the Irish partner of NCF, to give disabled and economicallydisadvantaged children and adults access to technology.In April 2005, <strong>Dell</strong> launched our U.K. donation program partneringwith ReCOM, a partner of the National Cristina Foundation.ReCOM links individuals and businesses who want to providea second useful life for used IT equipment with charities andvoluntary groups working to improve the services and facilitiesfor the disadvantaged groups they support.<strong>Dell</strong> is continuing efforts to expand donation programs to othercountries in 2006.Customer Communications<strong>Dell</strong>'s direct relationships with customers enable us toaddress customers' environmental interests when developingnew technology and services. <strong>Dell</strong> also reaches out to currentand prospective customers to let them know about our consumerrecycling offers through a variety of sales and marketingchannels including catalogues, e-mail marketing and salesconfirmation materials.<strong>Dell</strong>'s Consumer Education Program: "No ComputerShould Go to Waste"Raising consumer awareness of the need to responsiblyrecycle unwanted computer equipment is one of the challengesfaced by the electronics industry, and <strong>Dell</strong> is committed todoing our part.In 2005, <strong>Dell</strong>'s "No Computer Should Go to Waste" consumereducation campaign included computer recycling events, grantsto several higher education institutions for computer recyclingevents, and outreach events and communications around <strong>Dell</strong>'spartnership with Goodwill.D E L L S U S T A I N A B I L I T Y R E P O R T • F I S C A L Y E A R 2 0 0 661
