<strong>Dell</strong>-Winston School Solar Car ChallengeUsing classroom skills in a real-world setting helps studentsbecome more proficient in math, science, technology andteamwork. Since 2002, <strong>Dell</strong> and the Winston School in Dallas,Texas, have brought technology to life for students fromthroughout the United States and Mexico with the <strong>Dell</strong>-Winston School Solar Car Challenge.Each year, the <strong>Dell</strong>-Winston School Solar Car Challengealternates between a closed-course race at the Texas MotorSpeedway and a cross-country route. More than 180 highschoolstudents participated in the 2005 eight-day race thatbegan at <strong>Dell</strong>'s headquarters in Round Rock, Texas. The raceended 1,600 miles later at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratoryin Pasadena, California. During the trek, solar car teams used<strong>Dell</strong> notebooks to gauge solar-car battery usage, monitorweather patterns, and track competitors by means of globalpositioning systems.The Houston, Mississippi Solar Race Team and Saint ThomasAcademy Experimental Vehicle Team from Mendota Heights,Minnesota, won their respective divisions in this year's<strong>Dell</strong>-Winston School Solar Car Challenge. For more informationabout the race, see www.winstonsolar.org/race.Bracknell Forest Voluntary Action Group<strong>Dell</strong> contributed to the Bracknell Forest Voluntary Action (BFVA)Group to help equip the Bracknell Community IT Classroom, acomputer lab for use by Bracknell's 250 charities and communitygroups, as well as their existing clientele. The lab, also opento the Bracknell community at large, provides educational supportto disadvantaged youth, teaching technological skills andinstilling a sense of self-worth. The BFVA group is a nonprofitorganization that facilitates relationships among 250 communitygroups providing services for disadvantaged children andyouth in the area. The group also offers advice and training toat-risk children in an accessible, drop-in environment. <strong>Dell</strong>employee volunteers help staff and maintain daily operations atthe lab.
