Updated Final Safety Analysis Report - (STS-004-002)8 POWER CONVERSION SYSTEMSThe power conversion systems included the main high pressure steam system supplying the mainpropulsion unit and the following auxiliary engine room systems:The auxiliary high pressure steam system, which supplied high pressure steam to the ship’s serviceturbine generators, main feed pump turbine and the other auxiliaries.The main and auxiliary feedwater systems, which supplied feedwater from the deaerating feedwaterheater to the main boilers and the main blowdown evaporator.The main and auxiliary condensate systems, which delivered the condensate to the deaeratingfeedwater heater from the hotwells of the main and auxiliary condensers and from the air ejectors.The makeup water purification system, which purified and provided fresh makeup water to the plantfrom the evaporators as needed.The salt water circulating system, which cooled the main and auxiliary condensers.The intermediate steam pressure system.The electric power generating and distribution system.The instrument air and ship service air systems.All of these systems and their components were conventional for a ship of its generation. Theirarrangement incorporated best practices in conventional engine rooms with a view to accessibility andease of maintenance. The only non-conventional feature of the engine room resulting from the nuclearpower plant was the main control room with its main control console. This room was separately airconditionedand insulated. From its five front windows, the power plant operator had a wide view of theengine room at all times. The design characteristics of the power plant are summarized in Table 8-1.8.1 Steam Generators8.1.1 General DescriptionThe steam generators are deactivated, drained, disabled and performs no active function.The steam generators were used in conjunction with the reactor to generate steam for the propulsionsystem. The two steam generators, one in the port loop and one in the starboard loop, were locatedwithin the containment vessel. Primary coolant water that had been heated in the reactor wascirculated through these two heat exchangers by the primary pumps. Each loop circulated about10,000 gpm through each heat exchanger. The average temperature of the primary coolant water inthe steam generators was 508°F.The steam generators are of the natural circulation, two-fluid type. Each consists of a horizontal U-shaped heat exchanger and a separate steam drum (see Figure 7-4). The heat exchanger is a singlepass, shell and tube type with the primary coolant flowing through the tubes and steam beinggenerated from the secondary water flowing through the shell side. The steam-water mixture passedupward from the heat exchanger to the steam drum through riser tubes. In the steam drum, the steamdrum was separated from the water by cyclone separators and scrubbers. The steam passed though adry pipe assembly and existed through an outlet nozzle at the top of the steam drum. The waterreturned to the shell side of the heat exchanger through downcomers.Rev. VI 71
