MSN-Course DescriptionsMSN Core CoursesBELLIN COLLEGE CATALOG2011-12NUR 600: Professional Role Transition3 creditsThis course familiarizes students with the concepts, skills, and expectations that will guide their professionalrole transition as they progress in the master’s program. The focus is on scholarship, leadership, inquiry,interactive learning, and graduate study expectations.NUR 610: Theories of Nursing & Leadership3 creditsThis course examines theory as the basis for advanced role specialization. Nursing and leadership theoriesand their interrelationship are examined with an emphasis on evaluation and utilization. Selected concepts,including change, critical thinking, empowerment, and motivation will be applied to advanced nursing roles.NUR 636: Health Systems & Organizations3 creditsSystems are analyzed in relation to organizational structure, function, and governance. Organizationalculture, change, care coordination, and integrated health systems are examined. The responsibilities of thenurse leader in promotion of patient safety and quality improved initiatives are introduced.NUR 648: Health Policy and Advocacy3 creditsNursing leadership roles involving health care are examined from a health policy and clinical preventionperspective. Responsibility for nursing leadership in policy development, advocacy, and financing isdeveloped. Health outcome improvement and population health strategies are introduced.NUR 662: Research3 creditsThe primary focus of this course is the development of knowledge and skills to integrate theory, practiceand research. The nursing leader, collaborating with other professionals, asks questions, searches forevidence, evaluates outcomes, and proposes additional questions for improved health care.NUR 797, NUR 798, NUR 799: Leadership Integration Project3 creditsThe Leadership Integration Project is the final evidence for meeting the MSN program outcomes. Anintegration of knowledge and experience from coursework and practica are applied to this Project as ademonstration of the advanced specialization role and nursing scholarship. Students will work with theirindividual MSN program advisor throughout the entire process. The three credits may be taken individually,or in combination as long as the student meets the required outcome for each credit assigned.Comprehensive AssessmentStudents must demonstrate the ability to integrate the leadership, knowledge, and skills acquired in theMSN program in a scholarly manner. Application will be demonstrated in the completion of a LeadershipIntegration Project. The student and advisor design the project within the framework of the curriculumoutcomes and the student career goals. The completion of the project will be facilitated across the student'sprogram of study.99
