CHAPELS-
BAPTIST CHAPEL, in Priory Street, is a Gothic buHding,
with tower ; was erected in 1868 at a cost of about £6,000,
and will seat 700.
CATHOLIC APOSTOLIC CHURCH Mission Eoom is in
Aldwark, immediately at the back of Salem Chapel.
INDEPENDENT.—Lendal Chapel, in Lendal, a plain
brick building, erected in 1816; will seat 1,300. It was here
the Eev. James Parsons commenced his pastorate in York.
Salem Chapel, at the end of St. Saviourgate, a large
square building having a bold front facing the same street.
It has a fine elevated portico, with Ionic pillars of stone and
pediment; was erected in 1839 for the Eev. James Parsons,
who officiated here for over thirty years. It will hold about
1,600 persons.
PEIMITIYE METHODIST. — Ebenezer Chapel, in
Little Stonegate, was erected in 1851 ; will seat about 700.
Nunnery Lane Mission House, erected in 1864; will
seat near 400.
Heslington Eoad Chapel, in Apollo Street, erected in
1868; will seat nearly 300.
Layerthorpe Chapel, in Duke of York Street; will
seat 250.
Victoria Bar Chapel, Bishophill. Eenaissance in style
of red and wliite brick, was erected in 1879 at a cost of
£2,700 ;
will seat 900 persons.
FEIENDS' OE QUAKEES' MEETING HOUSE, in
Friargate, Castlegate ; consists of two buildings ; the first
was erected in 1673 and the latter in 1816, and will seat
1000 persons.
EOMAN CATHOLIC—St. Wilfrid, pro-Cathedral
Church in Duncombe Street, built in 1864. Early English;
—consists of nave, aisles, chancel with apse, side chapels, and
ornamental tower. The principal entrance is through a very
ornate doorway, above which is a figure of the patron saint. In
the chancel is some elaborate carving, including nine heads of
the patriarchs, life size. On the front of the altar is a representation
of The Entombment of Our Saviour. Some of the
windows contain good specimens of modern stained glass.
