In the compilation of this book, the author has
endeavoured, as far as possible, to furnish accurate
information to the visitor of such places of interest
as are herein described, and as they at present exist.
The historical portion is derived from a perusal of
the most reliable
sources, and is offered as the result
of much careful labour and diligent research.
From the limited scope of this work, it
was necessary
to be concise on many points where amplification
would have been much more pleasant ; still, it is
to be hoped it will supply a want long felt, viz., a
trustworthy modern guide and handbook to
the City
of York.
