84 Mason's Hospital, CoUiergate, for six poor women, is a small almshouse, founded by Margaret Mason, 1732. Maison Dieu, in St. Dennis Church Lane, Walmgate,. rebuilt 1811. Much uncertainty exists as to its original founders, but it is devoted to the use of four poor shoemakers. Merchant Tailors' Hospital was built in 1730 by the Merchant Tailors' Company, for the use of four poor brethren or sisters. It is situate in Aldwark, adjoining the Company's HaU. St. Catherine's Hospital, Holgate Road, is of very ancient origin, and intended for the entertainment of poor travellers who could not pay for lodgings in the city. It is now used for the maintenance of four poor widows, a certain bequest being made for that purpose by Mrs, Frances Nicholson in 1709. St. Michael's (Spurriergate), Hospital, in Friargate, for four poor people. St. Thomas's Hospital, Victoria Bar, Nunnery-lane, is a handsome building, for twelve poor widows. It was founded by Mr. Luntley, who bequeathed £1,000 in 1791. It formerly belonged to the Guild of Corpus Christi, and is dedicated to the memory of St. Thomas a Beckett. The present erection dates 1862. Thompson's Hospital, Castlegate, founded in 1700 by Sir Henry Thompson, for the relief of six poor men. Trinity Hospital, Merchants' Hall, Fossgate, for five poor men and five poor women, is under the management o£ the Merchants' Company. It is situate on the site of a hospital founded in 1373. Watter's Hospital, Chapel-row, George-street, Walmgate, was founded by Sir Robert Watter in 1612; consists of. seven cottages for as many poor women, and was rebuilt in 1844. Wandesford's, or, as it is generally termed, "The Old Maids' " Hospital, Bootham, was founded by Mrs. Mary Wandesford for ten single gentlewomen, 1725. The build-^ ing is of brick, and is separated from the street by a small grass plot. There is a chapel on the ground floor, in which service is held every Wednesday and Friday.
85 Wilson's Hospital, Fossbridge, for ten poor women, was founded and endowed by Mrs. Dorothy Wilson, 1717. The j)roperty, having lately much increased in value, now affords relief to sixteen alms-women and eight blind pensioners (nonresident). Wintersoale's Hospital, Walmgate, founded by Mr. Percival Winterscale in 1705, for six poor women of St. Margaret's Parish. Penitentiary, or Eefuge, is on Bishophill; Was first established in 1822, and its funds liberally increased by a .l3equest of £5,000 made by Dr. Beckwith in 1843. MEDICAL. COUNTY HOSPITAL, "Monkgate, is a large and handsome structure of brick, with stone dressings, consisting of four stories, having an Italian elevation ; was erected in 1850. The charity was founded originally by Lady Elizabeth Hastings in 1740, who left a legacy of i;500 " for the relief of the diseased poor of the city and county of York." It is supported by donations and annual subscriptions. There are 110 beds for patients. The daily average number of in-patients is at prersent 77. The number of out-patients during the year is about 4000. DISPENSAEY, New Street, was founded in 1788, and removed to its present situation in 1828, at a cost of about £2000. The number of patients attended to yearly is over 9,000. INSTITUTION FOR DISEASES OF THE EYE, Held in a room in Merchant Tailors' Hall, Aldwark, was founded in 1831. HOMOEOPATHIC DISPENSARY, Victoria Hall, Goodramgate, was established 1851 ; open on Tuesdays and Saturdays. INVALID KITCHEN, Blake Street. INSTITUTION FOR TRAINED NURSES, No. 7, Bootham.
