<strong>—</strong> job destructi<strong>on</strong>: automati<strong>on</strong>, robotisati<strong>on</strong>;<br />
<strong>—</strong> job shift: digital platforms, crowd sourcing, ‘sharing’ <str<strong>on</strong>g>ec<strong>on</strong>omy</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
These four <str<strong>on</strong>g>impact</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> digitalisati<strong>on</strong> are shot through with macroec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />
stakes deriving from developments in <strong>labour</strong> <strong>markets</strong>, pay, social inequality,<br />
quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> newly created, changed, or ‘shifted’ jobs, etc.<br />
The following pages will examine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> principal existing studies, first for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
various sectors <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> industry <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n for services.<br />
One initial comment is, however, in order: it is increasingly apparent from a<br />
reading <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> literature that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> traditi<strong>on</strong>al split between ‘industry’ <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
‘services’ is becoming ever less relevant. The ‘Fourth Industrial Revoluti<strong>on</strong>’<br />
seems to be making <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fr<strong>on</strong>tier between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> two sectors much more porous:<br />
an emblematic case <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this characteristic merging <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> industry <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> services is<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> so-called intelligent car, potentially a ‘computer <strong>on</strong> wheels’ (industriAll<br />
2015), incorporating all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> services that mobile applicati<strong>on</strong>s are increasingly<br />
able to <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fer <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> user.<br />
It is significant that a major German car manufacturer boasts not <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
technological features <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>its</str<strong>on</strong>g> vehicles (performance, comfort, etc.) but also ‘a new<br />
form <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mobility for a more dynamic way to get around’ (car2go by Daimler 12 )<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> that it is already at work devising <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> different services that it might <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fer<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> passengers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>its</str<strong>on</strong>g> future driverless cars: entertainment, virtual reality,<br />
historical or tourist informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> places through which it passes, etc. 13<br />
Similarly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Internati<strong>on</strong>al Automobile Federati<strong>on</strong> (FIA) recently revealed to<br />
what extent <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cars <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> today collect for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir manufacturers all sorts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
pers<strong>on</strong>al data about car owners. Thus certain models <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> BMW send to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />
manufacturer data c<strong>on</strong>cerning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> driver, her/his locati<strong>on</strong>, routes taken, last<br />
hundred parking spaces, manner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> driving, mobile ph<strong>on</strong>e synchr<strong>on</strong>isati<strong>on</strong><br />
data, etc. (FIA 2015). According to The Ec<strong>on</strong>omist (2015b), ‘a high-end car, for<br />
instance, has <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> digital horsepower <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 20 pers<strong>on</strong>al computers <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> generates<br />
25 gigabytes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> data per hour <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> driving’.<br />
By c<strong>on</strong>trast, it is equally significant that a company like Google should be<br />
investing in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> aut<strong>on</strong>omous vehicles that are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> product <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>its</str<strong>on</strong>g> geolocati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>line route calculati<strong>on</strong> services, etc. This development is<br />
also reflected in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> adjective ‘smart’ increasingly used to describe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />
vehicles <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> which, according to our hypo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>sis, simply reflects <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
combinati<strong>on</strong> between industry <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> digital services: after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ‘smart’ ph<strong>on</strong>e we<br />
now have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> smart car, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> smart factory, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> smart watch, smart clo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
even smart cities. At <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> in a manner that is better documented,<br />
this development corresp<strong>on</strong>ds to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> emergence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an <str<strong>on</strong>g>ec<strong>on</strong>omy</str<strong>on</strong>g> based <strong>on</strong><br />
services <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> no l<strong>on</strong>ger solely <strong>on</strong> ownership. Does <strong>on</strong>e need to be a car owner<br />
or to have ready access to services that provide mobility? Does <strong>on</strong>e need to own<br />
