Indeed, in San Francisco (California) a lively debate erupted in 2015 about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>sequences <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Airbnb <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> supply <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> accommodati<strong>on</strong> (falling) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> price<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> rents (increasing), with increasing numbers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> owners preferring <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> higher<br />

income to be derived from renting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir property to tourists. The same<br />

phenomen<strong>on</strong> is beginning to be observed in certain European cities, in<br />

particular Paris.<br />

What is more, this phenomen<strong>on</strong> is accompanied by what might be described<br />

as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> emergence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> digital discriminati<strong>on</strong>, even though this aspect seems today<br />

to be very little documented. To our knowledge, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are extremely few studies<br />

available, but those which do exist show that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> discriminati<strong>on</strong> patterns <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

real <str<strong>on</strong>g>ec<strong>on</strong>omy</str<strong>on</strong>g> are being reproduced in just <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same way in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> digital <str<strong>on</strong>g>ec<strong>on</strong>omy</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same vein, an interesting study published by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Harvard Business<br />

School examines <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> questi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ‘digital discriminati<strong>on</strong>’ at Airbnb. ‘Online<br />

marketplaces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten c<strong>on</strong>tain informati<strong>on</strong> not <strong>on</strong>ly about products, but also<br />

about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> people selling <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> products. In an effort to facilitate trust, many<br />

platforms encourage sellers to provide pers<strong>on</strong>al pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>iles <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> even to post<br />

pictures <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mselves. However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se features may also facilitate<br />

discriminati<strong>on</strong> based <strong>on</strong> sellers’ race, gender, age, or o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r aspects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

appearance’ (Edelman <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Luca 2014). It indeed emerges from this study that<br />

‘using a new data set combining pictures <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all New York City l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>lords <strong>on</strong><br />

Airbnb with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir rental prices <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> about quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rentals,<br />

we show that n<strong>on</strong>-black hosts charge approximately 12% more than black hosts<br />

for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> equivalent rental (…). These findings highlight <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> prevalence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

discriminati<strong>on</strong> in <strong>on</strong>line marketplaces, suggesting an important unintended<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sequence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a seemingly routine mechanism for building trust’ (Edelman<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Luca 2014).<br />

Thus, a study <strong>on</strong> peer-to-peer financing shows that ‘loan listings with Blacks<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> attached picture are 25 to 35 percent less likely to receive funding than<br />

those <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whites with similar credit pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>iles’ (Pope <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sydnor 2008) According<br />

to this study, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interest rates asked <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blacks in this mode <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> alternative<br />

financing are 60 to 80 base points higher than those asked <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Whites.<br />
