<str<strong>on</strong>g>Digitalisati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>ec<strong>on</strong>omy</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>its</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>impact</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>labour</strong> <strong>markets</strong><br />
workers, sick workers, or just tired workers. Call center workers, ticket agents,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> delivery people all work under similar scripts <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> under comparable<br />
surveillance’ (Irani 2015).<br />
The c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong> reached by Head is that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> smart machines, by dictating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />
tasks to human workers, could indeed end up deskilling workforces. Yet, while<br />
such a risk exists, he himself believes in a different approach to technology <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
cites <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Treuh<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> workshop in Chemnitz, Germany, as presenting <strong>on</strong>e<br />
possibility. ‘The shop uses advanced machining systems to manufacture<br />
comp<strong>on</strong>ents, but str<strong>on</strong>g trade uni<strong>on</strong>s facilitate worker c<strong>on</strong>trol over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir labor.<br />
Managers send specificati<strong>on</strong>s to workers trained in craft apprentice traditi<strong>on</strong>s<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> those workers decide how to use machine tools to design <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> comp<strong>on</strong>ent.<br />
The Treuh<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> workers augment <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir craft with technology without falling<br />
under managerial microc<strong>on</strong>trol from a distance.’<br />
The role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> trade uni<strong>on</strong>s is, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore, in this case, to ensure that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tech -<br />
nology is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tool <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> worker <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> not <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r way round.<br />
2.2.4 Blurring <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fr<strong>on</strong>tier between working life<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> private life<br />
Ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r feature <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spread <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> new technologies is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir irrupti<strong>on</strong> in both <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
working envir<strong>on</strong>ment <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> in private life. This is a development likely to<br />
gradually erase <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fr<strong>on</strong>tier between working life <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> private life (reading<br />
emails at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> weekend, replying, surfing <strong>on</strong> internet in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> evening, etc.) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
to alter <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> balance between working life <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> family life, for example. Thus ‘<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
intensificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> work <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> excessive c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> to work-linked devices are<br />
likely to damage <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> balance in life, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> even to harm employees’ health’<br />
(Mettling 2015).<br />
What, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> workplace (<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> here we are no l<strong>on</strong>ger speaking <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> digital<br />
platforms), is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> likely <str<strong>on</strong>g>impact</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> working time <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this blurring phenomen<strong>on</strong>?<br />
It is still very difficult to c<strong>on</strong>duct an analysis because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re seems to be a<br />
paucity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> data <strong>on</strong> this subject. That an <str<strong>on</strong>g>impact</str<strong>on</strong>g> does exist, however, seems<br />
certain. ‘In increasing numbers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cases, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> workload is not always best<br />
measured by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> working hours. It is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore desirable to develop alternative<br />
approaches’ (Mettling 2015: 18). How, indeed, in a world <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> distance-c<strong>on</strong>nected<br />
working, is it possible to enforce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> provisi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> European working time<br />
directive 2003/88/EC – provisi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> maximum working hours, <strong>on</strong> daily rest<br />
periods, etc.?<br />
Employers retort that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> irrupti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> new technologies within working life has<br />
also c<strong>on</strong>tributed to an irrupti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> private life within working life, e.g. <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> private emails or <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Facebook page, etc. during working hours.<br />
