<str<strong>on</strong>g>Digitalisati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>ec<strong>on</strong>omy</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>its</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>impact</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>labour</strong> <strong>markets</strong><br />

Ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r aspect is that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>trol. As menti<strong>on</strong>ed above, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> new forms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

management, including c<strong>on</strong>tinuous real-time evaluati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> worker<br />

performance <strong>on</strong> smart producti<strong>on</strong> lines, can become important sources <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

stress. It has also been observed that older workers (aged 45 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> above) have<br />

a more tense relati<strong>on</strong>ship with new technologies that can c<strong>on</strong>tribute to a<br />

decrease in occupati<strong>on</strong>al wellbeing.<br />

More generally, it is possible to observe that a series <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> tasks that were<br />

previously performed by pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong>al workers have today become task that<br />

every ‘citizen-worker’ has to perform for him- or herself: carrying out bank<br />

transacti<strong>on</strong>s, booking train tickets, comparing energy suppliers, choosing a<br />

telecommunicati<strong>on</strong>s operator, selecting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best ‘pack’ corresp<strong>on</strong>ding to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

(self) analysis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his/her behaviour as a c<strong>on</strong>sumer. ‘Now we do most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> those<br />

things ourselves. We are doing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> jobs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ten different people while still trying<br />

to keep up with our lives, our children <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> parents, our friends, our careers,<br />

our hobbies, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> our favourite TV shows’ (The Guardian, 18 January 2015,<br />

quoted in Valsamis 2015).<br />

2.2.7 O<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r aspects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> inequality<br />

There exists ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r aspect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> inequality, little touched up<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> literature,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> yet very clearly <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> interest. This is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> inequalities between extremely<br />

affluent <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> low-income households. Saska Sassen maintains that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re exists<br />

an inequality between low-paid <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> ‘high-end’ workers in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ‘capacity to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>nect’, whenever necessary, to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> life c<strong>on</strong>stituted by work,<br />

family work <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment. According to her findings, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is an underuse<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> digital tools <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> mobile apps am<strong>on</strong>g low-income families.<br />

At <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time, most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> digital applicati<strong>on</strong>s developed do not aim to help<br />

or to solve <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> problems <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> low-income workers, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir households <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />

limited resources. ‘For instance, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are l<strong>on</strong>g lists <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> apps for c<strong>on</strong>tacting or<br />

finding spas, high-end restaurants, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a l<strong>on</strong>g list <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r such pricey luxuries.<br />

But <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are few if any apps that give you informati<strong>on</strong> about a health food<br />

shop in a modest-to-poor income area in a city. In short, what is absent is<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong>s that address <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> needs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> low-income individuals <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> households’<br />

(Sassen 2015: 4).<br />

It would be possible, in Sassen’s view, to develop applicati<strong>on</strong>s that would have<br />

real usefulness <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> local level or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> level <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> collective acti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> that would<br />

enable people to meet <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> needs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> local communities with low earnings: for<br />

example, applicati<strong>on</strong>s enabling <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> neighbours <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a sick or h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>icapped<br />

pers<strong>on</strong> to be informed in case <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> distress, facilitating organisati<strong>on</strong> within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

community, or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> delivery <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> first aid. There do exist, as we have seen above,<br />

some platforms aimed at streng<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning neighbourhood links by d<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> helping <strong>on</strong>e ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, for example Streetbank. But such instances are few<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> far between; indeed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y represent <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> excepti<strong>on</strong> in this new digital<br />

ecosystem.<br />
