<str<strong>on</strong>g>Digitalisati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>ec<strong>on</strong>omy</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>its</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>impact</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>labour</strong> <strong>markets</strong><br />

<strong>—</strong> digital remote maintenance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> machine tools (Trumpf AG);<br />

<strong>—</strong> digital integrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> logistics: RFID tracking <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> garments in warehouses<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> retail stores (Inditex – Zara br<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>).<br />

According to Roubini (2015), ‘in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> years ahead, breakthroughs in robotics<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> automati<strong>on</strong> will boost productivity <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> efficiency, which will translate into<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic gains for manufacturers. This wave <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> development will also benefit<br />

s<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tware developers, engineers, research scientists o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r workers with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> skills<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> educati<strong>on</strong> necessary to operate in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> brave new manufacturing era’.<br />

While productivity gains are emphasised by all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> authors referred to in this<br />

study, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir c<strong>on</strong>sequences in employment terms are characterised by ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

marked differences in approach. Several authors have a ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r pessimistic<br />

visi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>sequences <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this revoluti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>labour</strong> market. Again<br />

according to Roubini (2015), ‘The risk is that workers in high-skilled, bluecollar<br />

manufacturing jobs will be displaced by machines before <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dust settles<br />

at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Third Industrial Revoluti<strong>on</strong>. We may be heading toward a<br />

future where factories c<strong>on</strong>sist <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e highly skilled engineer running hundreds<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> machines – with <strong>on</strong>e worker left sweeping <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> floor… until that job is given<br />

to an industrial-strength Roomba Robot.’<br />

Ford is quite c<strong>on</strong>vinced that this is where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future lies, describing also <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

phenomen<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fshoring in which highly skilled pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong>al jobs (lawyer,<br />

radiologist, tax expert, s<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tware programmer, etc.) are increasingly relocated<br />

to cheap-<strong>labour</strong> countries, for example India where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are now tax experts<br />

specialising in US tax law. Yet this does not apply to highly skilled jobs al<strong>on</strong>e:<br />

‘virtually any occupati<strong>on</strong> that primarily involves manipulating informati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

is not in some way anchored locally (…) is potentially at risk from <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fshoring<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relatively near future <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n from full automati<strong>on</strong> somewhat fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

out. Full automati<strong>on</strong> is simply <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> logical next step’ (Ford 2015: 118).<br />

Erik Brynjolfss<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Andrew McAfee (2011) also insist <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

accelerati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> technologies which, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coming years, will change <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> income<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> jobs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> milli<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> workers. ‘Computers (hardware, s<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tware, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

networks) are <strong>on</strong>ly going to get more powerful <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> capable in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> future, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

have an ever-bigger <str<strong>on</strong>g>impact</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> jobs, skills, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>ec<strong>on</strong>omy</str<strong>on</strong>g>. The root <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our<br />

problems is not that we’re in a Great Recessi<strong>on</strong>, or a Great Stagnati<strong>on</strong>, but<br />

ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r that we are in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> early throes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Great Restructuring. Our technologies<br />

are racing ahead but many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our skills <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> organizati<strong>on</strong>s are lagging behind.<br />

So it’s urgent that we underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se phenomena, discuss <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir implicati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> come up with strategies that allow human workers to race ahead with<br />

machines instead <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> racing against <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m’.<br />

Viewed in a historical perspective, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> questi<strong>on</strong>s at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> heart <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this<br />

revoluti<strong>on</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent to which it will be characterised by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> creati<strong>on</strong> or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

destructi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> jobs. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 19 th century English cott<strong>on</strong> mills <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> appearance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

machines was seen by workers as a threat to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir jobs. This is why some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se workers – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Luddites – fought <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> destroyed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> machines which, as<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omists are generally agreed, in reality c<strong>on</strong>tributed to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> creati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
