THE PARABLE OF THE CHARIOT
āṯmāna̱guṁ rathı̍ naṁ vi̱ ddhi̱ śarī̍raguṁ ra̱ tham e̍ va tu |
buḏdhiṁ tu̱ sāra̍thiṁ vi̱ ddhi̱ mana̍ ḥ pragra̱ ham e̍ va ca || 3 ||
ātmānaṁ = the Self;
rathinaṁ = is the
viddhi = know that rider
śarīraṁ = the body;
ratham eva = is indeed the chariot;
tu = and;
buddhiṁ = the intellect
viddhi = know ;
sārathiṁ = the charioteer;
manaḥ = the mind
pragraham = is the bridle.
Know that the Self is the rider of the Chariot and the Intellect is the Charioteer
and Mind is the bridle that controls the chariot.
iṉdriyā̱ṇi ha̍ yān āẖu̱ r vi̱ ṣayā̍ṁs teṣu̱ goca̍ rān |
āṯmendri̱ ya-ma̍no-yuḵta̱ m bho̱ ktety ā̍hur ma̱ nīṣı̍ ṇah || 4 ||
indriyāni = the senses;
hayān = the horse
