naciketaḥ = O Naciketas;<br />
saḥ tvam = such as you are<br />
abhidhyāyan = having considered<br />
kāmān = desirable things;<br />
ca = and;<br />
priyān = dear ones<br />
priya-rūpāṁ = objects that produce delight, ;<br />
atyasrākṣīḥ = you have rejected;<br />
na avāptaḥ = you have not accepted;<br />
etāṁ = this;<br />
sṛṅkāṁ = course;<br />
vittamayīm = abounding in wealth;<br />
yasyām = by which;<br />
bahavaḥ = many;<br />
manuṣyāḥ = mortals;<br />
majjanti = sink, come to grief.<br />
O Nachiketa, people like you after pondering well the pleasures that are or seem<br />
to he delightful now, renounced them all. You have not taken the road abounding<br />
in wealth, where many men sink.<br />
dūra̍ ̍̍ ̍m ete vi̱ ̱parī̍ ̍te viṣūcī avi̍ ̍dyā yā ca vi̱ ̱̱ḏyeti jñātā |<br />
vidyā̍ ̍bhīpsinaṁ na̱ ̱cike̍ ̍tasam manye na̱ ̱ tvā kā̱ ̱mā baha̍ ̍vo lolupanta || 4 ||<br />

viparīte = contradictory, mutually exclusive;<br />
viṣūcī = have divergent courses;<br />
yā ca = that which;<br />
jñātā = is fully ascertained, known by the learned;<br />
avidyā iti = ignorance;<br />
yā ca = and that which is;<br />
vidyā iti = as knowledge.<br />
