idam vicikitsanti = entertain doubt;<br />

sāmparāye = in the context of the great departure;<br />

yat = which ;<br />

mahati = is calculated to lead to a great result;<br />

ayaṁ varaḥ = this boon;<br />

yaḥ = which is;<br />

gūḍam anupraviṣṭaḥ = has entered into an inaccessible recess;<br />

tasmāt = apart from that boon;<br />

nānyaṁ = no other;<br />

naciketā vṛṇīte = does Naciketas request.<br />

Clinching the whole matter, Nachiketas says: “I shall not be satisfied with all the<br />

things you offer. I shall be happy only with that thing about which even the gods<br />

have doubt. What happens to the soul in the last stage? Nachiketas shall not ask<br />

another question. Nachiketas wants nothing else than this.”<br />

The student has proved his worth. The glamour has not tempted him, and he has stood<br />

the test successfully. This is the transitional process which is necessary between the<br />

first two boons and the experience of immortality.<br />
