vṛṇīśva = ask for;<br />
mahad-āyatanaṁ = a vast expanse, habitat, region, a kingdom -<br />
bhūmeḥ = of the earth.<br />
ca = and,<br />
svayaṁ = you I yourself;<br />
jīva = live,<br />
śaradaḥ = years;<br />
yāvat icchasi = as you wish to live.<br />
Yama said: Choose sons and grandsons who shall live a hundred years; choose<br />
elephants, horses, herds of cattle and gold. Choose a vast domain on earth; live<br />
here as many years as you desires.<br />
etat tulyam yadi manyase, varaṁ vṛṇ<br />
ṛṇīṣva, vittaṁ cira-jīvikāṁ ca,<br />
mahā-bhῡmau naciketas tvam edhi, kāmānāṁ tvā kāmabhājaṁ karomi. (24)<br />
naciketas = O Naciketas;<br />
yadi = if;<br />
manyase = you think that;<br />
etat tulyam = equal to this;<br />
varaṁ vṛṇīśva = please request that boon;<br />
vittaṁ = wealth;<br />
ca = and;<br />
cira-jīvikaṁ = longevity,<br />
mahā-bhūmau = vast tracts of land;<br />
tvam = you,<br />
edhi = become (prosper);<br />
kāmānāṁ = of all desirable things;<br />
tvā kāma-bhājam karomi = I will make you the enjoyer.<br />
“Any boon like this that you want, choose it, and wealth and long life. Prosper, O<br />
Nachiketas, on this vast earth!”<br />
