Wrestling<br />
The popular and traditional sport of Wrestling was held<br />
from 6th to 9th February 2016 at the Deshbhakt Tarun<br />
Ram Phukam Indoor Stadium at the R G Baruah Sports<br />
Complex in Guwahati. Only the freestyle version of the<br />
sport was held and featured 57kg, 61kg, 65kg, 70kg,<br />
74kg, 86kg, 97kg and 125kg weight categories for men<br />
and 48kg, 53kg, 55kg, 58kg, 60kg, 63kg, 69kg and 75kg<br />
weight categories for women. The event witnessed<br />
participation of 47 male athletes from Afghanistan,<br />
Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and 32<br />
female athletes from India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri<br />
Lanka. The athletes were supported by 29 officials.<br />
Hosts India, which has continuously produced<br />
champion wrestlers in the recent times, went on to<br />
win 14 out of the 16 gold medals on offer despite<br />
sending a very young team for the competition. The<br />
likes of Ravinder, Pradeep Kumar, Rajneesh, Amit<br />
Dhankar, Mausam Khatri dominated the men’s segment<br />
while Priyanka Singh, Mamta Rani, Archana Tomar,<br />
Manju Kumari, Manisha, Shilpi Sheron, Rajani and<br />
Nikki cleaned up all the Gold medals on offer in the<br />
women’s segment. The only loss for the dominant<br />
Indian contingent came against the experienced<br />
Commonwealth Gold medalist Mohd Inam in the 86 kg<br />
category and Zanam Anwar in the super heavy weight<br />
125kg category.<br />
The competitions were conducted successfully by 8<br />
ITOs, 16 NTOs and Competition Director Shri V N<br />
