The 12-day sporting extravaganza of 12th South
Asian Games, 2016 held at Guwahati and Shillong
from the 5th to 16th of February, 2016 was brought
to a fitting end by a grand Closing Ceremony on
16th February, 2016 at Indira Gandhi Athletics
Stadium, Sarusajai, Guwahati. Putting an end to
all the speculations whether the two North Eastern
cities of Guwahati and Shillong would be able to
hold the Games, the event turned out to be the
most successful one. The edition of the Games
was acclaimed as the best ever organised Games
in the over-three-decade history of the event.
The Closing Ceremony was a celebration of the
South Asian unity, sportsmanship and a preview
to what awaits the contingents in the next host
country- Nepal. As part of farewell to the Games,
SAOC handed over its flag to the next host nation,
Nepal thereafter declaring the Games closed in the
ceremony that witnessed the congregation of around
35000 spectators, including athletes, team officials,
technical officials, Games Family, sponsors, media
and broadcast as well as workforce and guests.
The musical extravaganza in the event, featured the
electrifying youth oriented performances by eight
live bands from across the North Eastern states, with
performances by the legendary “Lou Majaw and
friends” and Music Director Mayukh Hazarika’s
band “The Brahmaputra Balladeers”. A melange of
cultural performances by the Angelos Luit Choir,
Dr. Sangita Kakati, Priyanka Bharali and dancers
from Assam added a local flavour to the event. The
show was summed up by the iconic performance of
celebrity Bollywood singer Shaan belting out some
of his most popular numbers to a crowd that had
gathered to bid adieu to the 3500 sports personalities
who gave their hearts and souls to win victories for
the eight SAARC nations.
That’s what they said:
“My Government successfully hosted the 12th
South Asian Games at Guwahati and Shillong
in which more than 3,500 sportspersons from
all the SAARC countries participated”, said
the honourable President of India Shri Pranab
Mukherjee addressing the joint session of the
Parliament.
“End of SAG with mesmerizing Closing
Ceremony”, Dainik Janambhumi, 17th Feb. 2016
“A tearful adieu to SAG with fond memories”,
Janasadharan, 17th Feb. 2016
