Badminton<br />

Badminton, which is currently one of India’s<br />

most popular sports was played in front of<br />

a capacity crowd at the picturesque SAI-<br />

NEHU Centre in Shillong from the 6th to 10th<br />

February 2016. The 7 medal events in the sport<br />

included Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles,<br />

Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed<br />

Doubles, Men’s Team and Women’s Team<br />

events. A total of 76 athletes participated in the<br />

sport with 39 men and 37 women along with<br />

26 team officials.<br />

Hosts India, aced the competition winning<br />

Gold and Silver in all the individual categories<br />

along with Gold Medals in the team events<br />

with Sri Lanka winning both the silvers in<br />

team events and finishing second by virtue<br />

of the same. The event which featured top<br />

shuttlers like Kidamdi Srikanth, HS Prannoy,<br />

Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Poppana and P V<br />

Sindhu will however be remembered for the<br />

upset caused by 19 year old Ruthvika Shivani<br />

Gadde, who defeated the experienced India’s<br />

No. 2 and world No.12 PV Sindhu in a rip<br />

roaring finale in straight sets of the women’s<br />

singles event and announced her arrival on the<br />

big stage. This was a big upset considering<br />

she had never been able to even win a game<br />

against her experienced opponent in all her<br />

previous meetings.<br />

The event was ably supported by 4 ITOs, 49<br />

NTOs and Competition Director Shri Punnaiah<br />

Choudhary.<br />
