Taekwondo<br />

The Taekwondo event for the 12th South Asian<br />

Games was held from 10th to 15th February 2016 at<br />

the NEIHGRIMS Indoor Hall in Shillong. The event<br />

featured 54kg, 58kg, 63kg, 68kg, 74kg, 80kg, 87kg and<br />

87kg+ categories for men and 46kg, 49kg, 53kg, 57kg<br />

and 62kg categories for women. 53 men and 32 women<br />

participated along with 40 officials.<br />

The Taekwondo event was one of the most closely<br />

contested sport at the 12th South Asian Games with<br />

Afghanistan coming out as overall champions with 6<br />

gold medals, closely followed by hosts India with 5<br />

gold medals and Pakistan with 2 gold medals. Nepal<br />

did not win any gold but put in a spirited performance<br />

winning 7 silver medals. The Afghanistan challenge<br />

was spearheaded by legendary Rohullah Nikpai the<br />

two time Olympic bronze medalist from the country.<br />

Afghanistan won 5 out of the 8 Gold medals in men’s<br />

category with India winning two and Pakistan the<br />

remaining one Gold medal. In the women’s segment<br />

the experience of Purva Dixit, Latika Bhandari and<br />

Margerita Regi won the Gold for India while 16 year<br />

old Yasmeen M Khan created history for Pakistan by<br />

winning the under 46kg category Gold.<br />

The memorable event was conducted efficiently by 5<br />

ITOs, 32 NTOs and Competition Director Shri Jayanta<br />

Kumar Das.<br />
