SHOOTING<br />

The popular sport of Shooting was held from 9th to 15th<br />

February 2016 at the Kahilipara Shooting Range in Guwahati.<br />

The men’s competition featured team and individual events<br />

in 10m air rifle, 10m air pistol, 25m centre fire pistol, 25m<br />

standard pistol, 25m rapid fire pistol, 50m pistol, 50m rifle<br />

prone and 50m rifle 3 position while the women’s competition<br />

featured team and individual events in 10m air rifle, 10m<br />

air pistol, 25m pistol, 50m rifle prone and 50m rifle 3 positions.<br />

The sport had participation of a total of 60 male and<br />

55 female athletes with 26 team officials. Athletes from all<br />

nations except Afghanistan participated in shooting.<br />

Hosts India, which is now one of the power houses in world<br />

shooting, showed its mettle winning 25 out of the 26 Gold<br />

medals on offer with Bangladesh winning the remaining<br />

Gold. The shooting range was lit up by the performances of<br />

ace Indian shooters Gagan Narang, Chain Singh, Gurpreet<br />

Singh, Vijay Kumar, Apurvi Chandela, Heena Sindhu as well<br />

as young Indian shooters like Anjum Moudgil. Ahmed Sakil<br />

the solitary non-indian gold medal winner brought cheers for<br />

the Bangladesh contingent by becoming the first pistol shooter<br />

to win a gold medal in an international event after a gap of<br />

23 years. Bangladesh last won an international gold medal in<br />

shooting at the South Asian Games held in Dhaka in 1993.<br />

The high precision technical sport was conducted flawlessly<br />

by 10 ITOs, 41 NTOs and Competition Director Shri Bhaba<br />

Kalita.<br />
