Tennis<br />

The Tennis event which featured men’s single, men’s doubles, women’s<br />

singles, women’s double and mixed double competitions was held from<br />

7th to 11th February 2016 at the All Assam Tennis Association Complex<br />

and featured 30 male athletes from all 8 South Asian Countries and 20<br />

female athletes from all nations except Afghanistan and Maldives. These<br />

athletes were supported by 18 team officials.<br />

Hosts India, which has been the regional superpower in tennis, completely<br />

dominated the event winning Gold and Silver in each of the<br />

5 competitions. Sri Lanka with 6 bronze medals and Pakistan with 4<br />

bronze medals won the rest of the medals on offer. In the men’s single<br />

event the young Ramkumar Ramanathan defeated the experienced Saketh<br />

Mynemi, Ramanathan also won the doubles event with his partner<br />

Vijay Sunder and also defeated the experienced pairing of Divij Sharan<br />

and Sanam Singh. In the women’s section favourite Ankita Raina lived<br />

up to the expectations winning the Gold against Prerna Bhambri. Ankita<br />

then partnered with Divij Sharan to win the mixed doubles finals as<br />

well. Even the presence of experienced Aisam Ul Haq Qureshi could not<br />

lift the performance of Pakistan Tennis team.<br />

The 4 day event was technically conducted by 2 ITOs, 38 NTOs and<br />

Competition Director Shri Ankush Dutta.<br />
