Wushu<br />

The traditional Chinese martial art sport of Wushu<br />

was held at the Assam Rifles Indoor Stadium from<br />

7th to 10th February 2016 in Shillong. A relatively<br />

new sport to South Asian Games, the event had both<br />

the forms in Taolo and Shanshou. Taolo for men<br />

featured Chanquan, Nanquan and Nangun, Daoshu<br />

and Gunshu, Taijiquan and Taijijian. The Daoshu and<br />

Gunshu category did not feature in the women’s event.<br />

Shanshou for men featured 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 65kg,<br />

70kg and 75kg weight categories while Shanshou for<br />

women featured only 52kg, 60kg and 70kg weight<br />

categories. Barring Maldives and Bhutan all the<br />

countries participated in the event with a total of 60<br />

male athletes, 27 female athletes and 30 team officials.<br />

Eventhough, the hosts ran away with 11 of the possible<br />

16 Gold medals in Wushu, the sport witnessed some<br />

really close bouts between the participating countries.<br />

Pakistan finished with 2 Gold medals, followed by<br />

Nepal winning 1 Gold and 10 Silver medal; with some<br />

luck they could have easily added a few more Golds to<br />

their tally. Sri Lanka and Afghanistan also won a Gold<br />

each.<br />

The inclusion of Wushu in SAG immensely helped in<br />

popularizing the sport and was conducted in a befitting<br />

manner by technical team comprising of 12 ITOs, 24<br />

NTOs and Competition Director Shri Shambu Seth.<br />
