A statutory authority established under<br />

the Aboriginal Lands Act 1995 (Tas) to act<br />

as a custodian of parcels of land returned<br />

to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.<br />

A systematic approach for improving<br />

resource management by learning from<br />

management outcomes.<br />

Aeromonas salmonicida<br />

A bacterial disease of salmonids.<br />

Ammonia<br />

A compound of nitrogen and hydrogen<br />

with the formula NH 3.<br />

Amoebic Gill Disease (AGD)<br />

Caused by Neoparamoeba perurans, the<br />

most important amoeba in cultured fish.<br />

Aquaculture<br />

The farming of aquatic organisms<br />

including fish, molluscs, crustaceans and<br />

aquatic plants with intervention such as<br />

regular stocking, feeding and protection<br />

from predators in the rearing process to<br />

enhance production.<br />

Australian Standard that establishes<br />

an audit framework principally for use<br />

by third party bodies that have been<br />

asked by an organisation to conduct an<br />

independent audit of the organisation’s<br />

OHS management system.<br />

Astaxanthin<br />

The carotenoid astaxanthin is added to<br />

the diets of farmed salmon to ensure the<br />

flesh has the rich colour that consumers<br />

seek. Astaxanthin is not just a pigment,<br />

but is closely related to beta-carotene<br />

(the precursor of vitamin A), and plays<br />

a role in the fishes’ immune system and<br />

acts as an antioxidant, promoting the<br />

good health of the fish.<br />
