OIE Aquatic Animal Health Code<br />

Standards for the improvement of aquatic<br />

Omega-3<br />

Being or composed of polyunsaturated<br />

fatty acids that have the final double<br />

bond in the hydrocarbon chain between<br />

the third and fourth carbon atoms from<br />

the end of the molecule opposite that of<br />

the carboxyl group. These are found in<br />

fish, fish oils, green leafy vegetables, and<br />

some nuts and vegetable oils<br />

Pathogen<br />

A bacterium, virus or other microorganism<br />

that can cause disease.<br />

PCR test<br />

Polymerase Chain Reaction test. A<br />

method used to amplify selected sections<br />

of DNA or RNA.<br />

Pelagic fisheries<br />

Commercial fishery of fish that inhabit the<br />

pelagic zone. Species include forage fish<br />

such as anchovies and sardines.<br />

Phosphates<br />

An inorganic chemical that can exist in a<br />

soluble form.<br />

Pilchard orthomyxovirus<br />

An endemic disease of pilchards<br />

belonging to the family orthomyxoviridae.<br />

Ploidy<br />

The number of sets of chromosomes in a<br />

cell, or in the cells of an organism.<br />

PO 4e<br />

Phosphate equivalent.<br />

POMV<br />

(see Pilchard orthomyxovirus).<br />

Precautionary principle<br />

When an activity raises threats of harm<br />

to human health or the environment,<br />

precautionary measures should be<br />

taken even if some cause and effect<br />

relationships are not fully established<br />

A facility where raw materials are<br />

processed into finished products.<br />

Prophylactic<br />

A preventative measure.<br />

Treated water supplied through a system<br />

A civil organisation that promotes<br />

Standards<br />

A standard established by the RSPCA<br />

to improve the lives of Australia’s farm<br />

animals and provide guidance and a<br />

trustworthy choice to consumers wishing<br />

to purchase products from higher welfare<br />

farming systems.<br />

ROV Dive<br />

Inspection dives that are performed by<br />

Remote Operated Vehicles.<br />

Salmonid<br />

Any fish of the family Salmonidiae, which<br />

includes Salmon.<br />

Salmo salar<br />

The scientific name for Atlantic Salmon.<br />

Scope 1 emission<br />

All direct GHG emissions, e.g.<br />

combustion of fuel in company cars or<br />

machinery.<br />

Scope 2 emission<br />

Indirect GHG emissions from<br />

consumption of purchased electricity,<br />

heat or steam.<br />

Scope 3 emission<br />

Other indirect emissions, such as the<br />

extraction and production of purchased<br />

materials and fuels, transport related<br />

activities in vehicles not owned or<br />

controlled by the reporting entity,<br />

electricity related activities (e.g.<br />

T&D losses) not covered in scope 2,<br />

outsourced activities, waste disposal, etc.<br />

Selective breeding<br />

The intentional breeding of organisms<br />

with desirable traits to produce offspring<br />

with similar desirable characteristics or<br />

with improved traits.<br />

Smolt<br />

A stage in the life cycle of salmonids at<br />

which the salmon is ready to move from<br />

the freshwater to saltwater environment.<br />

Smoltification<br />

An internal metabolic process which<br />

enables a fish to adapt from fresh to<br />
