the eternal town
Τα Χανιά είναι για πολλούς η ωραιότερη πόλη της Κρήτης. Δεν
είναι τυχαίο, αφού το βενετσιάνικο λιμάνι της και τα στενά γραφικά
σοκάκια της, που παραπέμπουν τις αισθήσεις όσων τα επισκεφτεί
σε άλλη εποχή, είναι τα ιδιαίτερα χαρακτηριστικά αυτής της πόλης,
μαγεύοντας αμέσως ακόμα και τον πιο απαιτητικό επισκέπτη της.
Από ανασκαφές και αρχαιολογικές έρευνες που έγιναν κατά μήκος
της πόλης των Χανίων, αποδείχθηκε ότι είναι κτισμένη στα ερείπια
της αρχαίας Κυδωνίας. Ο Κύδωνας γιος του Ερμή για κάποιους,
ενώ για κάποιους άλλους γιος του Απόλλωνα αλλά και της νύμφης
Ακακαλίδας - κόρη του Μίνωα - ήταν ο ιδρυτής της πόλης. Για το
τωρινό τοπωνύμιο της πόλης οι εκδοχές είναι αρκετές. Πιστεύεται
ότι το όνομα Χανιά προέρχεται από την παραφθορά του ονόματος
Χθονία, που ήταν και ένα από τα αρχαία ονόματα της Κρήτης.
Άλλες εκδοχές είναι ότι προέρχεται από το Αραβικό χάνι αλλά
ίσως και από το Αλχανία κώμη, προάστιο ή συνοικία της αρχαίας
Κυδωνίας. Η ιστορία των Χανίων διασώζεται μέσα στους αιώνες,
παίζοντας σημαντικό ρόλο στη διαμόρφωση της ιστορίας του
νησιού μας, κυριαρχώντας και πρωταγωνιστώντας στη Βυζαντινή,
Ενετική, Οθωμανική περίοδο, μέχρι και το Β’ Παγκόσμιο πόλεμο.
Το ιδιαίτερο με την πόλη των Χανίων είναι ότι ακόμα και σήμερα
χωρίζεται σε δύο τμήματα, την παλιά πόλη με το παλιό λιμάνι και
τη νέα πόλη. Η παλιά πόλη κτίστηκε περιμετρικά του βενετσιάνικου
λιμανιού και περιβάλλεται από τα ενετικά τείχη που κτίστηκαν
το 1538, κάποια τμήματα από τα οποία διασώζονται ακόμα και
σήμερα, ανατολικά και δυτικά κυρίως. Στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα
όμως, τα νότια τμήματα των τειχών καταστράφηκαν προκειμένου
να χρησιμοποιηθούν τα υλικά τους για την κατασκευή της
κεντρικής Αγοράς, κτίσμα ποικίλης σημασίας, αλλά και διαφόρων
άλλων δημοσίων και μη κτηρίων, με αποτέλεσμα εκεί να αρχίσει να
αναπτύσσεται η νέα πόλη.
Many people consider Chania as the most beautiful town of
Crete. It is no coincidence, because the Venetian harbor and
narrow streets that are characteristic of this town will transfer
your senses to the bygone era and will immediately enchant
even the most demanding visitor.
The excavations and the archaeological surveys conducted in
the town of Chania, proved that the town had been built on the
ruins of the ancient town Kydonia. Kydon the son of Hermes
while for the some others the son of Apollo and the nymph
Akakalida, the daughter of Minos was the founder of the city.
There are several versions concerning the current name of the
town. It is believed that the name (Chania) Hania comes from a
corruption of the name Khthonia, which was one of the ancient
names of Crete. Other versions state that it comes from the
Arabic word meaning “inn” or perhaps from Alchania village
that was the suburb or the district of the ancient Kydonia. The
history of Chania has been preserved through the centuries,
playing an important role in shaping the history of our island,
dominating in Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman periods until the
Second World War.
The special feature about this town is that even today is divided
into two parts, the old town, the old port and the new town. The
old town was built around the Venetian harbor and surrounded
by the Venetian walls that were built in 1538, some parts
of which mostly in the east and west still survive today. In the
early 20th century, however, the southern parts of the walls
were destroyed in order to use their materials for the construction
of the Central Market, a building of varying importance and
various other public and non-public buildings that caused the
beginning of the development of the new part of the town.
