individualism, exploitation, and economic growth. But we have
been up to the challenge, and perhaps even up to challenging the
western notion of economic development.
There are Inuit-owned co-op stores run by the Federation of
Co-operatives of Northern Quebec (Ilagiisaq - FCNQ), and created
before our land claim treaty, the JBNQA. And of course, there
are Air Inuit and First Air, which we own through Makivik. And
Makivik continues to manage other economic ventures such as in
the shrimp fishery, seal-oil production, shipping, fuel distribution,
and selling country food specialties to larger and newer markets.
More recently, just this past spring, Nunavik Creations was opened
as a new subsidiary of Makivik. It vitalizes the clothing industry in
Nunavik by using Inuit talent and expertise, and by exposing contemporary
Inuit clothing to the outside world through the fashion
industry and the Internet.

The economic challenge continues, for by no means are we
near the capacity of sustaining our means of financial autonomy.
New ideas and ventures continue to be sought out. More and
more individuals are making contributions to the Nunavik economy
as well. There are, for example, Inuksiutiit Foods in Kuujjuaq,
and Pitsituuq in Puvirnituq that both specialize in food resources
of Nunavik.
More recently, however, for the benefit of community and
economic and development in Nunavik, an agreement was struck
between the Inuit of Quebec and the Government of Quebec. The
Sanarrutik Agreement dealt with longstanding implementation
issues, and the funds received through this agreement are already
being put to work in the North. Through much of the development
process, there is also the goal of creating employment opportunities
for Inuit in the North, though it is not always easy. Economic
development in Nunavik may continue as it may, and the progress
