The Justice Committees in Nunavik strive to bring back the
Inuit traditional way of administering justice, keeping in mind
today’s reality. The main mandate stemming from this is to
restore relationships within the communities and resolve conflicts
between people. The members of the Justice Committees
are not there to judge or replace the judicial system, but to
help Inuit to empower themselves by taking control of their own
problems. Success lies within the communities in which Justice
Committees reside.
The Quebec Ministr y of Justice, the Community Justice
Committee, and Makivik are in the process of negotiating the
procedures of the protocol agreement that would allow the
crown prosecutor to divert cases to the Justice Committees. In
the meantime, Justice Committees are involved in other activities
related to their mandates.
The six Justice Committees in Nunavik each have there own
names to better demonstrate the goal and mandates of each.
