Makivik has accumulated thousands of photographs
that date back to around the time of the Northern
Quebec Inuit Association. These photos have been taken
mainly for the purpose of publishing in magazines and
annual reports. However, other Makivik departments
have also taken photos over the years to document their
activities.
A few efforts have been made over the years to
organize and properly archive this collection. But with
other priorities, no definitive
method has been
established to organize
and access the collection.
With digital technology it
has become more feasible
to scan the photos with the
aim of creating a database
to more easily find the photos
a person is looking for,
while preventing the original
photos from being damaged
due to over-handling.
Furthermore, it has become
more common for people to
take original photos using
digital cameras, such that negatives, slides, and prints
will become less and less common.
With this in mind, Mathew Partridge has been contracted
to organize and scan Makivik’s photo collection
and back them up through digital media such as on CDs
or tape. As with any photo collection, at first glance many
of the pictures seem to be of little value. There are many,
for example, that are out of focus, or that show certain
individuals with less than flattering expressions. However,
even a photo that seems to be worthless at first glance
may be valuable; for example if it shows a building or an
area that has changed over time, or if it shows persons
who have deceased since the photo was taken. Most
importantly, we will be judicious in preserving this collection
to be enjoyed and valued by generations to come.
Meanwhile, with Makivik’s 25th anniversary in mind,
we have selected the following series of photographs
as samples of some of the key events that have been
recorded by the camera over this past quarter-century.
We also wish to thank the former Makivik executives as
well as the other political leaders who have contributed
their congratulatory comments, which we have added to
enhance this photo essay.
