Sammy Kudluk attended his first annual general
meeting as a new member of the Inuit Art
Foundation’s (IAF’s) board of directors at their
location, 2081 Merivale Road, Ottawa, from May
26th to 30th, 2003. The IAF is a non-profit organization
that “helps artists to help themselves”.
Established In 1985, the foundation is owned and
controlled by Inuit artists. Their board consists of
eight Inuit artists: three from Nunavut, three from
Nunavik, and two from Labrador, who also represent
the Inuvialuit.
Unfortunatly, the IAF has been going through
a very difficult period concerning it’s funding from
DIAND. Half of its just over $1-million budget comes
from DIAND. New government policies delayed funding
for the IAF, which endangered the continuation
of their operations, including
their magazine, Inuit Art
Quarterly, and many on-going
projects. These projects
include cultural industries,
training and development,
quarr y equipment contributions
to the Nor th, and
international events such as
the proposed construction of
inuksuks issued by the prime
minister for the new Canadian
embassy in Iceland and in St.
Peterburg, Russia.
The IAF’s formerly biannual gatherings, Qaqqiq,
of Inuit artists, cultural demonstrations and sale
of inuit art, have been reduced to once a year,
but their updated internet site (www.inuitart.org)
makes online shopping easier for potential Inuit art
customers and has had many benefits.
In spite of limited funding, the IAF’s board deliberation
resulted in an official from DIAND attending
the IAF’s board meeting to give reassurance of continued
funding for the future of this organization.
Sammy, who is now also Makivik’s new Associate
Editor, says this meeting helped him to realize the
IAF’s potential to benefit Nunavik Inuit artists, culture,
and tourism in the region.
