HAPPENINGS SINGAPORE SPOTLIGHT Glowing Gardens The tail end of September will see most of Asia celebrating the end of the Autumn Harvest with the Mid-Autumn Festival. Traditionally, the festivities are marked with lantern processions as well as the consumption of mooncakes. At the renowned Gardens by the Bay however, the celebration is ushered in with grand form with a number of special attractions. Considered as one of Asia’s foremost garden destinations, the Gardens will exhibit sprawling lantern sets depicting the “Autumn Abundance” of the harvest season on its grounds. Offering not only a picturesque and highly ‘instagrammable’ setting, Gardens by the Bay will also host nightly cultural performances, a showcase of local delights and interactive activities for young children throughout the duration of the festival. September 22 - October 8, gardensbythebay.com.sg GATHERING OF SUPERHEROES For the tenth year running, the Singapore Toy Game & Comic Convention (STGCC) will showcase the latest and greatest in the toy, gaming and comic industry. Although the event has served as a gathering place for collectors and comic book and gaming fans, the STGCC has grown to become of the region’s premiere pop culture events. Attended by thousands, the STGCC also sees a number of cosplayers throng the event. Expect a legion of characters from Star Wars, Marvel and DC to invade the Sands Expo and Convention Centre Singapore throughout the two-day event. Joining in on the fun will be industry heavyweights from the various comics, toys and gaming industry. Scheduled to appear at this year’s event for talks and meet-and-greets are Frank Cho, creator of beloved comic strip series Liberty Meadows as well as Max Toy Company founder, Mark Nagata and Marvel Artist, Arthur Adams. September 9-10, singaporetgcc.com GAME, SET & MATCH The best of women’s tennis will vie for honours at the BNP Paribas WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Finals in Singapore in October. For the fourth year running, the Garden City will be the battleground for the top female tennis players as they go for broke in the run-up to the end of the 2017 tennis season. With the WTA season winding down, this event will serve as the premiere event for the top eight singles and top eight doubles teams as they gun for the USD 7 million total prize money up for grabs at this year’s event. More importantly, the event will also serve as one of the key events for players to move up the rankings before the start of the new season next year. The indoor hard court event is scheduled to be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium with the likes of Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Venus Williams and reigning Wimbledon Champion, Garbiñe Muguruza expected to headline this year’s WTA Finals.
