Following concerns about rising land
costs and the potential loss of cultural
value caused by commercial facilities, the
city of Jeonju is planning to introduce a
quality certification system for businesses
in Hanok village by the end of the year.
This will be the first time that a local
government introduces a quality rating
system for businesses within tourist
destinations. The city plans to create
the rating system alongside residents
and merchants, offering incentives to
participating businesses. Experts hope
that the introduction of Jeonju’s own
“Michelin Guide” will help guarantee
consistent quality through an object
and fair criteria.

Namwon Residents Can Now Enjoy
the Benefits of Bicycle Insurance

The city of Namwon recently spent
38,000,000 won on a bicycle insurance
policy for all residents. The policy
covers 83,000 people, including foreign
residents who have their addresses
registered in the city. The yearly
insurance plan went into effect on
February 1st of this year, with plans
for renewal in late January of 2020. For

Jeollabuk-do is set to take a leap forward
in 2019 after the government approved
the construction of an international
airport in Saemangeum. Namgi Hong,
Korea’s deputy finance minister,
expressed that the planned international
airport will further drive Saemangeum’s
development by luring investors and
promoting international exchange.
The central and regional governments
are set on making Saemangeum a hub for
international trade despite concerns with
other regional airports having financial
difficulties. With an estimated cost of well
over 1 trillion won, the construction of
the airport is expected to have a ripple
effect on the local economy.
These new developments are the result
of steps taken to increase Sino Korean
economic cooperation. Following the
signing of the China-South Korea Free
Trade Agreement in 2014, Korea and China
plan to create an open economic zone
known as the Saemangeum Korea-China
Economic Cooperation Complex (SECC).
