Fortunately, unknown artists around
Korea have seen the beauty in these
underserved and forgotten places,
and they sought to give them a
“makeover” with colorful murals,
unique installations, and attentiongrabbing
art.
Jaman Mural Village in Jeonju, is proof
of these artistic projects that brought
a once downtrodden area back to life.
This historic district located along
the foot of Seungamsan Mountain’s
Jungbawi Rock had an incredible revival
with its facades turned into a vibrant
tourist hotspot where visitors can take
pictures in amazing backdrops.
Images from the Japanese animated
film company, Studio Ghibli, were
painted on the walls, as well as several
pop culture characters that welcome
both young and old.
It may be quite a climb, but everyone
will find something interesting in every
corner. Small business owners and
residents were given a new form of
livelihood, with some of them opening
craft shops, homemade goods stores, and
cozy cafes. An interesting tidbit about
these murals is that the artists followed
the common theme of flower to make
all masterpieces cohesive and
pleasant to the eyes.
An artistic endeavor turned
this once forgotten historic
district into a vibrant,
popular tourist spot.
