idiotyczne has∏o, jakie kiedykolwiek istnia∏o. Dlaczego akurat
Niemcy – pytam: skoro nie pragnà, nie reprezentujà, nie unaoczniajà
niczego, co przedstawia∏oby wi´kszà wartoÊç od jakiejkolwiek
innej dotychczasowej mocy! Same w sobie sà tylko kolejnym
du˝ym paƒstwem, kolejnà niedorzecznoÊcià w Êwiecie.

A dlaczego akurat Polska? Czego ona pragnie, co reprezentuje
i co unaocznia? Jakiego rodzaju i jak wielkà wartoÊç antropologicznà?
Polak – co to za typ cz∏owieka? Czy Polacy sà dobrymi
Europejczykami? Czy dobry Europejczyk winien si´ raczej wystrzegaç

Niemcy rozpoznali – nawet jeÊli nie jako pierwsi, to z pewnoÊcià
jako pierwsi z takà przenikliwoÊcià i rozmachem – metafizycznà
rang´ pracy. Praca by∏a byç mo˝e pierwszym prawdziwie niemieckim
tematem; choç ch´tniej zapewne kojarzylibyÊmy ich (a i oni
najpewniej ch´tnie kojarzyliby samych siebie) ze sztukà lub myÊleniem
– ów naród poetów i filozofów – czasami mo˝e z wojnà lub
wr´cz militaryzmem, ale to w∏aÊnie praca sta∏a si´, przynajmniej od
'Deutschland, Deutschland über alles' – that is perhaps the most
idiotic slogan that has ever been uttered. Why Germany at all –
I ask: if it doesn't want, represent, exemplify something that has
more value than any other previous power represented! It is just
another big country, another absurdity in the world.

And why Poland? What does it want, what does it represent and
what does it exemplify? What anthropological value does it have
and how great is it? A Pole – what kind of person is that? Are Poles
good Europeans? Should good Europeans avoid Polishness?
Or should they rather defend it, should they want to become Poles?
What deserves to be defended, if only to linger, if only to survive?
By the way, wasn't the survival skill one of the most interesting
Polish qualities, if not their only one? Hasn't Poland been – at least
for a few centuries now – a s u r v i v a l l a b o r a t o r y ?

The Germans recognised the metaphysical importance of work.
Even if they were not the first ones to do so, they were certainly the
first in terms of their insight and scale. Work was probably the first
truly German topic; although we would be more likely to associate
them (and they would most likely associate themselves) with art
or thinking – this nation of poets and philosophers – or perhaps
with war or even militarism. But it was work that became, at least
starting with Hegel, through Marx, ending with Jünger, an issue
