• how to be prepared for the target child, by meeting him at the entrance of the
classroom and be present;
• how to personally greet the target child, by making eye and/or body contact, and
going to the physical and emotional level of the child;
• how to help the target child to find somebody to greet by gathering peers around
him and prompt him to hand over the picture symbol or model to say “Hello”
verbally when necessary;
• how to wave or shout bye-bye as incorporated in the song and, for the caregiver,
how to leave the classroom and wait outside if questions arise or information
needs to be shared;
• how to engage the target child in play by having toys/materials of interest of him
available and within the teacher’s reach;
• how to guide the child to a play area by offering a toy/material with which to
play, if necessary;
• how to follow the target child’s pace and give enough time to respond to each
step, by pausing or slowing down in the music;
• how to motivate and prepare peers to participate in greeting by singing the
greeting song and modeling how to take the picture symbol, as well as giving
verbal praise as positive reinforcement; and
• how to communicate a positive attitude toward the target children by anticipating
the greeting routine with enthusiasm and emphasis the strength of the target
children.
