(2) Songs for the Music Hut. A booklet and CD with songs and activities for the
Music Hut was distributed to the participating teachers and childcare program’s therapists
prior to the intervention. The booklet included songs incorporating instruments in the Music
Hut and three instrumental pieces to promote therapeutic goals such as interaction, initiation,
cooperative play, self-expression and awareness, attention, and body control (Schnur Ritholz
& Robbins, 1999). Piano accompaniment and voice, as well as a sing- along of each piece,
were recorded on the CD. Theses materials were provided to encourage teachers to expand
their own repertoire of musical activities. The teachers were also encouraged to introduce
the music during circle time in the classroom to expand the children’s musical repertoire for
the Music Hut.
A medley entitled “Everybody in the Music Hut” with distinct contrasts of mood,
tempo and rhythm for each instrument was written for the Grand Opening of the outdoor
music center. A transcription of the medley is shown in Figure 6.3. All children and staff of
the childcare program were invited to participate in this event. A special introduction of the
instruments using a puppet, the medley and musical games was given.
