Diamond consists of a rigid three-dimensional array of carbon atoms, making it one of the hardest<br />

substances known. In contrast, graphite forms from extended planes of covalently bonded<br />

hexagonal rings of carbon atoms that can slide across one another easily. Fullerenes are spherical<br />

or ellipsoidal molecules with six- <strong>and</strong> five-membered rings of carbon atoms, <strong>and</strong> nanotubes are<br />

sheets of graphite rolled up into a cylinder.<br />
