managed in accordance with the clear principles of value management, focusing on profitable growth and<br />
value creation.<br />
The following chart depicts the structure of <strong>Evonik</strong>-Group:<br />
<strong>Evonik</strong>-Group's operations are grouped in the three business areas Chemicals, Energy and Real Estate. The<br />
eight business units Industrial Chemicals, Inorganic Materials, Consumer Specialties, Health & Nutrition,<br />
Coatings & Additives, Performance Polymers, Energy and Real Estate act as entrepreneurs within the<br />
enterprise. The Corporate Center supports the Executive Board in the strategic management of the group,<br />
while a Shared Service Center efficiently bundles internal services worldwide.<br />
<strong>Evonik</strong>-Group is managed on the basis of a consistent system of value-oriented indicators. These are used to<br />
assess the business performance of the operational units and <strong>Evonik</strong>-Group. Through systematic alignment to<br />
these indicators, <strong>Evonik</strong>-Group endeavors to generate cash flows to create value and ensure profitable<br />
growth. As well as achieving a good financial performance, <strong>Evonik</strong>-Group aims to demonstrate its ecological<br />
and social responsibility and therefore reports extensively on these aspects as well.<br />
B. PRINCIPAL MARKETS<br />
<strong>Evonik</strong>-Group has a leading market position by sales in the worldwide market for specialty chemicals, has<br />
long-standing experience in power generation from hard coal and renewable energies in Germany, Colombia,<br />
Turkey and the Philippines, and is by number of units one of the largest private residential real estate<br />
companies in Germany with its portfolio concentrated in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.<br />
C. THE BUSINESS AREAS AND BUSINESS UNITS OF THE COMPANY<br />
Chemicals Business Area<br />
The Chemicals Business Area bundles <strong>Evonik</strong>-Group's global specialty chemicals activities, which are<br />
divided into the six business units Industrial Chemicals, Inorganic Materials, Consumer Specialties, Health &<br />
Nutrition, Coatings & Additives and Performance Polymers. With over 100 production facilities worldwide,<br />
<strong>Evonik</strong>-Group is one of the largest companies in this sector. In the first half of 2009, the Chemicals Business<br />
Area generated sales of EUR 4,560 million (first half 2008: EUR 5,873 million) and earnings before interest,<br />
taxes, depreciation, amortisation, impairment losses, reversals of impairment losses and other non-operating<br />
result ("EBITDA") of EUR 628 million (first half 2008: EUR 932 million). In 2008, the Chemicals Business<br />
Area generated sales of EUR 11,512 million (2007: EUR 10,571 million) and an EBITDA of EUR 1,600<br />
million (2007: EUR 1,610 million).<br />
