conventions is but one way). Voigts-Virchow sees the relationship between the text and<br />

the film as “<strong>in</strong>termedial,” which is one way to describe the qualities of Shandean method.<br />

There are moments when the medium of film explicitly uses elements of the codex. A<br />

Cock and Bull Story substitutes the chapters and volumes of Tristram Shandy for<br />

different k<strong>in</strong>ds of cuts between scenes, but <strong>in</strong> the DVD production, “titled chapters” are<br />

used to <strong>in</strong>dicate different scenes, which remediate the “mediality of the book” (Voigts-<br />

Virchow 148).The black page <strong>in</strong>terruption is another example. But for the most part, the<br />

film’s <strong>in</strong>termediality can be found <strong>in</strong> the themes of the novel, which are lifted from the<br />

text and transferred <strong>in</strong>to visual action. The actors <strong>in</strong>terpret and then <strong>in</strong>timate the text,<br />

rather than recreate it. When we watch the relationship between Coogan and Brydon, we<br />

shouldbe rem<strong>in</strong>ded of the relationship between Walter and To<strong>by</strong> (who they each play,<br />

respectively). We should also feel alienated, or mislead, or confused <strong>by</strong> the film’s<br />

development, just as we should feel when we read Tristram Shandy. The experience of<br />

the text is mediated from the novel <strong>in</strong>to the film; its success as a transfer is signified <strong>by</strong><br />

the characters, conventions, and concepts that we see on screen, all <strong>in</strong> the spirit of the<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al novel. It is through an appeal to the Shandean spirit of the text that the<br />

“unfilmable” novel is adapted <strong>in</strong>to a film, which makes A Cock and Bull Story a<br />

conceptual adaptation and is thus ever more Shandean <strong>in</strong> its execution. ‘<br />
