CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Given its reputation as an “unreadable” book, as the novel “most hated” by
undergraduate English students (Gow 14), and as a text that needs a manual on how to
teach it, 1 figuring out the attraction and execution of adapting Laurence Sterne’s The Life
and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is a tough (chest)-nut to crack. Since the
publication of the first two volumes in 1759, and the publication of the subsequent
