“No.” She shook her head. “It doesn’t.”
“Do you regret it?” I hissed, anger churning in the pit of
my stomach. “If you could go back and change things,
would you do it?”
My mother’s tears-strained cheeks flushed even more,
and she looked away, but not before I caught the flash of
pain and guilt on her face. “If I could… I would have
changed how things were. I was a good wife, but I couldn’t
be a good mother.”
So, now, she cared. But too little, too late.
I got to my feet and straightened up. “Are you done?”
Silence. They both looked as if they had aged ten years
since I had last seen them. Tired. Frail. Weak.
Their story explained their pasts, but it wasn’t enough. I
still didn’t understand a lot of things. None of it made
sense in my head, and the hospital room swayed back and
forth in front of me.
“It’s too late,” I said out loud, the words were more for
me than for them.
It was too late… Eighteen years too late.
There was no fixing this.
