U13A
The girl’s hockey season started
with a tournament at King’s
School Bruton which always
gives the opportunity to show where our
hockey level is right from the start. With
teams such as Millfield School present
the standard is generally high. The Mount
Kelly girls acquitted themselves well
with some good initial performances,
however when competing with the likes
of Millfield School the Mount Kelly team
came under more pressure and this
exposed some of our younger players
more. Olivia Trimble in midfield was
the glue that held all things that we did
together. Hermance Vellaud showed her
goal scoring ability netting several times
in the tournament.
A great deal was learned by the Mount
Kelly girls from the tournament about
possession and spatial awareness by
holding position on the pitch. Strong
performances against St Peter’s School
Lympstone, Shebbear College, Exeter
Cathedral School, and Exeter School
showed that our girls had made good
progress in all areas by the end of the
term.
In the closer games against Wellington
School, Blundell’s School and King’s
Hall Taunton the girls showed some real
resilience with some super defensive
efforts from Christina Angelakis and shot
stopping from Rose Stanyer in goal.
The team consisted of a larger
proportion of Year 7 pupils this season
and despite perhaps struggling for pace
and strength this year they will be much
better for the experience going into the
new season 2022-2023.
U15
The girls kickstarted their journey
with a difficult preseason session
which really tested the girls
fortitude and desire to succeed. The day
culminated with a series of challenges
on Dartmoor and apart from a slightly
bruised future right winger, the team
escaped unscathed and ready for the
challenges ahead.
The U15 girls first target was Wellington
School. Despite a lot of build up towards
the game, the girls were able to secure
their first win of the season.
The next opposition came in the form
of Shebbear College. The domino effect
continued and another victory was
secured. However, the girls recognised
that these last two games were just
preparation for the next match against
Taunton School, who would really provide
a sterner contest.
Despite controlling the majority of the
first half of the game, the girls found
themselves trailing at the half time whistle.
There must have been something in those
orange slices because they returned
to the pitch a different side. Daisy Heal
showed her immense potential, making
dynamic breaks across the field. The
team’s metronomic presences of Ava
Hone and Matilda Kurzman kicked in as
they took control of the tempo. Rowena
Hill and Iona Reid made darting runs from
deep, which the energetic Sophie Varcoe
was able to latch onto. All that was needed
now was a goal threat and Lily Nordmann
stepped into that role, becoming the
team’s resident sharpshooter. The team
flipped the switch and the score finished
3-2. Taunton School were added to the
list.
The team continued their fine form
throughout the rest of the season.
Perhaps the climatic highlight being
the 7-0 defeat of Exeter School, who
are known to be a hockey power in the
region. A performance that was governed
by a sensational performance by Esmay
Moore.
It is evident this group has an incredible
bond, they care for one another and most
importantly push each other to progress.
It is safe to say that this group has a very
bright future and for now remain flawless.
