1ST XI
The senior cricket sides all had
strong seasons and our girls
programme continues to grow in
popularity and strength.
The annual opening fixture against the
MCC was not only special to mark the
start of the cricket season, but more
importantly the return to competitive
sport at Mount Kelly, post Covid-19. In
the early stages of the season, the 1st XI
narrowly missed out on proceeding into
the next round of the National Cup. Whilst
they lost to a strong Plymouth College
side in the cup early stages, we produced
a fine performance to beat Truro College
in a last over thriller winning by 3 wickets.
A special mention must go to Joseph
Wheeldon, who held his nerve to hit a
boundary on the last ball of the innings to
take the victory. The mid-season fixtures
did have some disruption from a changes
to the exam set up after the pandemic,
and the usual issues of Devon weather.
However, a flurry of strong opposition
with competitive matches in the second
half of term was a fitting finale in fine
summer weather. An impressive 7 wicket
win against Exeter School and a 3 wicket
win against a strong Head Master’s XI,
were performances to finish the season in
style. With only a handful of Upper Sixth
players in this year’s side, we certainly
have some promising years to come at
this level. It must also be mentioned that
this year was the first time we have been
able to field a Development XI, which
again highlights the growing strength and
engagement of cricket at Mount Kelly.
Other highlights include hosting a
very successful U13 Mount Kelly 6s
tournament for 16 schools on four
pitches. A thrilling day of big bash cricket
for the younger players in the system.
This is starting to become a recognised
event in the region and certainly one
that schools look forward to. We also
welcomed the return of County cricket
to Big Side, hosting both the Devon
Women’s side and the U18 Devon Men’s
side during the term.
