U16G at Charterhouse School with Millie
Kinkenberg and Ruby Blackaby-Peck
playing starring roles.
We continued our fitness during March
and introduced boxing as part of our
cross-training approach. We invited
Gavin Caldwell and his assistant
coaches, Barry Dann, and Gary Phillips to
Mount Kelly to introduce boxing training
into our performance plan. The players
really enjoyed it and are looking forward
to more of the same in the Summer Term.
Also, during March the prestigious Devon
versus Cornwall annual Brunel Cup
fixture took place with 9 out of 10 players
being chosen to take part. Emma Hunt,
Captain, Alice Gue, Scarlett McMahon,
Rosie Train, and Ruby Murphy at U18G
level, and Milly Klinkenberg and Jess
Smith at U16G level for Devon FA with
Erin O’Shea and Ruby Blackaby–Peck
representing Cornwall at U16G level
on April 2nd at Newquay AFC stadium.
Great kudos to the programme. The
10th member of the squad, Calais Butts
left early for Easter vacation to travel to
Canada to attend an Alberta Summer
Games training camp 27 to 31 March in
Vancouver, Canada.
Our Director of Sport, Bobby Skelton,
linked our programme in with Nottingham
University and we were able to take in
the magnificent new £40million facilities
whilst enjoying a 4-0 victory over the
University of Nottingham in the process.
The eagerly awaited visit to London
Chelsea was a prestigious game
on 25 May v Blenheim Chelsea at
Stamford Bridge, home of the world
club Champions, Chelsea FC. It was an
incredible experience for the Mount Kelly
U18 Girls, thoroughly enjoying a 3-1
victory.
Finishing off the season our 6 girls
representing ISFA England at U16 and
U18 level played their final games of
the season. Milly Klinkenberg and Ruby
Blackaby-Peck received treasured
mementos at U16 level, and Emma
Hunt, Calais Butts, Rosie Train, and
Ruby Murphy (captain) received their
International ISFA England U18 caps for
the season.
Our younger players Jess Smith, Milly
Klinkenberg and Erin O’Shea have
qualified for the national final with their
local side, MAP U15G to be played at St
George’s Park, National Sports Centre at
the end of June.
Our Captain, Emma Hunt received the
manager’s player of the year for Torquay
United Women FC and both Rosie Train
(Player’s Player of the Season) and Ruby
Murphy (Players Player of the Season
U23) at Plymouth Argyle Womens FC
awards night.
Overall, a remarkably successful and
eventful first year for our Mount Kelly
Chelsea U18G pupils.
TENNIS
TENNIS TOURNAMENTS
The tennis season began in earnest
with away games for both the U16s
(Stover) and the U9s (West Buckland).
Both of these big team fixtures were an
excellent experience for our players and
were both competitive and played in a
great spirit. The U15s who, captained by
Lewis Critchley, overcame some really
tough, wet conditions to win the Aegon
group stage of the LTA Schools Tennis
Competition. With a Year 5 and 6 interhouse
event and the Year 7 and 8 Road
to Wimbledon events taking place at
Mount Kelly, it really has been a fantastic
start to the Summer Term for many of our
budding players.
FESTIVAL OF TENNIS
We had a fantastic turn out for the first
ever Festival of Tennis at Tavistock Tennis
Club. 20 Mount Kelly players from Years
4 to 7 competed in mixed teams, playing
plenty of matches and winning lots of
prizes. The second session involved 14
players from Years 8 to 12 competing
in a round robin doubles format. Some
great matches and excellent tennis was
played.
Mount Kelly’s U15 Girls put on an
exceptional display to beat The Maynard
School and win the Aegon group for
West Devon.
Year 7 and 8 boys and Year 5 and 6
played matches against Exeter School
and West Buckland School this week.
All players should be very proud of their
performances.
